HOW TO PRESERVE A CHRISTMAS CACTUS LOOKING BEAUTIFUL ALL SEASON LONG

Not surprisingly, the Christmas cactus blooms around Christmas and sometimes around Easter, if properly taken care of, and is a beautiful holiday plant known in botany as zygocactus. You will be able to see the tips of the leaves begin to grow a month BC. Leaves darken over days until a bud forms. The blossoms bloom at Christmas time as if by magic, and become beautiful flowers that add color and warmth to any holiday season.

1

Provide your Christmas cactus with a bright but indirect light. Keep the plant in a well-lit location (for example, near a window) out of direct sunlight, as excess heat and light can weaken growth and burn leaves. It should also be away from drafts, heating vents, or other hot air sources

2

Provide the plants with a source of moisture if you live in a dry environment. Place a container of water near the plant so that the water evaporates and provides moisture. You can also make a dampener by placing a pot on a waterproof saucer and half pebble and water filled.

3

Use a well-drained container and well-draining soil. Some inexpensive seedling pots are good as a container, and orchids (the plastic basket-like type) will do the trick. Combine this pot with a pot that holds water and you can place the basket inside, then place a few medium-sized stones at the bottom so that the basket-like container sits about an inch above the bottom.

4

Add compost to help the plant grow. Actively growing plants should be given a flowering houseplant fertilizer. It’s best to do this for a 2-3 week old plant. Follow the label instructions for how much fertilizer to add and how to add it.
